Building Justice Through Intersectionality-Based Policy Analysis

Our Approach

We are experienced in developing justice through equitable policies that support historically underserved producers and communities, build community food systems, and strengthen our food supply chain. Justice is merely doing what’s right; equity is simply making things fair, and fairness is the right thing to do. Without equity – fairness by removing barriers, building access, and providing necessary resources through intersectional, needs-specific methods – justice is impossible to achieve. Through our public policy consultancy, we build justice by analyzing and strategizing fair public policy solutions to advise clients on the social impact of proposed and enacted regulations, legislation, and policies that promote or inhibit building just community-based agrarian systems that uplift the underserved.

We apply a unique intersectional approach by bringing social identity to the forefront. The human invention of Blackness, or rather “anti-Blackness (to be opposed to or hostile toward Black people), was codified in colonial America to inhibit the personhood of Black people, ensure their treatment as chattel, and maintain white supremacy, followed by subsequent oppressive laws, i.e. Black Codes, Jim Crow laws, segregation. Therefore, any undoing of anti-Blackness and other forms of systemic racism and social inequalities like gender inequality, will require intentional efforts through an intersectional lens. Intersectionality is the overlapping of social identities experienced as a member of multiple oppressed groups.

We approach public policy development through intersectionality-based policy analysis to get to the root of the policy problem and treat all historically underserved communities and farmers (e.g. Black farmers, Indigenous farmers, women farmers, underprivileged or impoverished farmers) equitably and not monolithically.
